Last long weekend Chile had a lot of basketball news, I will summary them, and later resume the weekly news updates.

DIMAYOR
On Tuesday, May 15, DIMAYOR (Division Mayor del Basquetbol)
had presidential elections, and after 33 years as Chairman, Luis Cerda
stepped down, being relaced by Juan Manuel Bravo (Industrial Engineer,
related to Universidad de Concepción)
No
news on when the competition will start, neither who will participate,
how many foreign players are allowed, what type of tournament, etc.
There are 5 teams so far in the Association: UDECONCE, U. Catolica,
Español Talca, Liceo Mixto Los Andes and U. Lagos Puerto Montt. Legal
issues are pending.
National Teams
Chilean
Male Under-15 Basketball achieved a milestone after beating Brazil for
third position, and qualifying to the Pre-Mundial U-16 in 2013.
The
Male Chilean adult team is training for the South American competition
in Argentina. We attended their first game in Concepcion, the players
have been cut-down in age to 25 years-old, a mixture of foreign
reinforcements and nationals is getting together to tune up. A new Head
Coach was suddenly appointed: Argentinian Guillermo Edgardo Vecchio.
LIbCentro
A
renewed league just started, including teams from the Center of Chile.
North and South groups are playing to select the 8 playoff teams that
will also be qualified to Liga Nacional in the Second Semester 2012.

Liga
Baloncesto del Sur is underway, with 4 series, started March 1, Libsur
finishes regular season on June 30. The Finals end on September 9. This
Southern league will qualify 8 teams to play Liga Nacional in the second
Semester of 2012.

Copa Chile
A
Federation-backed Tournament is scheduled to start soon, will include
professional and amateur teams, in a best-of-3 series, once is
completely defined. All the Chilean teams were invited to apply, and
those compliyng minimum conditions of Gymaniums and caccomodations
should be selected. Later the airings should be decided. This Tournament
usually runs in paralell with any other Leagues.
Liga Nacional
The
National League is returning in the Second semester of 2012. Will
accept teams from Libcentro and Libsur. Does not accept Dimayor teams,
since there is a current legal and power battle between the Federation
and Dimayor, mainly for TV rights.
WNBA
Chilean
National Ziomara Morrison, after playing in Europe, took the next step
and is currently playing WNBA (Women NBA) in the team San Antonio Silver
Stars. The 23 years-old has been playing abroad since she was 15. We
will continue to follow her career. Well done, Ziomara!
There is formation of new leagues, which shows how dynamic and unstable basketball is in Chile.
